After 2 straight wins in the Premier League there were high hopes going into this knockout round matchup against current Champions Real Madrid. Sadly things didn’t turn out how we wanted them to. After a blistering start and going two goals up we lost the plot and ended up losing 5-2.

A rematch of the Champions League final last year and a chance of revenge for many Liverpool players coming into this match. And that’s exactly what they did. The Liverpool players came rushing out the gates and it took Darwin Nunez just 3 minutes to break the deadlock. And he did it in style with a cheeky back heel past Courtois. You could see how much it meant to Nunez as he raced off to celebrate with the mad Liverpool fans. Salah then nearly made it 2-0 when he went weaving past the Madrid players but fired it wide. Salah made no mistake though a second time when Courtois mistakenly passed the ball to him for an easy tap in. A howler from the Madrid keeper, who got man of the match in the final last year, which gifted Liverpool their 2nd goal. Real were panicking on every touch of the ball they had but a moment of magic from Vini Jr reduced the deficit. After a great stop from Alisson minutes earlier he played it straight to the Brazilian who looped it over his head. Liverpool players and fans were thankful to hear the halftime whistle after dropping a two goal lead.

Liverpool then went 3-2 down 2 minutes after the restart when Joe Gomez gave away a needless free kick. Eder Militao headed home the cross Luka Modric whipped in. Gomez had an awful night looking sloppy and shaky throughout. Madrid made it 4-2 when Benzema’s shot got a huge deflection off our number 2. Benzema was credited for the goal much to the relief of Gomez. Benzema got his second when he wrongfooted Alisson. The match ended 5-2 to Madrid and there doesn’t seem much chance of Liverpool finding 4 goals without reply at the Bernabeu. But we did it against Barcelona and if we play with the same intensity that we had in the first half of this game then maybe just maybe we can do it against Real Madrid.
