Jurgen Klopp made one change after the great mersyside derby victory with a fit VVD coming back into the team for Joel Matip. Newcastle’s only other defeat earlier this season was to Liverpool after a late winner by Fabio Carvalho. Liverpool fans had high hopes coming into this match after a victory over Everton and the players certainly didn’t disappoint with another 2-0 win.
Alisson made a great save in the 4th minute denying Almiron, but with Newcastles quick start it was Liverpool who took the early lead after Darwin Nunez controlled one of Trent’s trademark crosses. Nunez rifled the shot past Pope who couldn’t do anything but watch it fly past him into the net. Our lead was doubled 7 minutes later when Salah crossed the ball to Gakpo who calmly finished for his 2nd goal in two games. Newcastle’s day got even worse when Alisson played Salah through and in a moment of madness Nick Pope came running out of his box and dived at the feet of Salah and handling the ball in the process. This made it one of Anthony Taylor’s easiest red cards he has ever had to hand out. Liverpool nearly made it 3-0 when Gakpo’s header was saved by substitute goalkeeper Dubravka. Even with ten men Newcastle still put Liverpool under a bit of pressure before the break when they hit the crossbar and Alisson had to save the day again with another good save.
At the start of the second half Newcasle had another good chance from a corner that Scharr just headed off target. Nunez then forced Dubravka to make a good save after cutting in from the left. Klopp brought fresh legs on at the hour mark with Jota, Firmino, Elliot and Milner coming on. Liverpool nearly made it 3-0 again when Robertson chose to pass to Salah instead of shooting. At the other end Alisson pulled off another world class save, going 1 on 1 with Callum Wilson. As the game went on Jota had several chances to score but failed to do so. Having only just come back from injury we are sure it won’t be long before Jota is on the scoresheet again. The final whistle blew and Liverpool celebrated their 2nd league win of 2023. The win puts them 6 points behind Newcastle with a game in hand. The race for Liverpool to get top 4 is on.
For keeping us ahead in the game and making some world class saves we are giving Allison the man of the match. He was and is a class act!
