Match Report – Everton

Finally our first league win of 2023. Tensions have been high at Liverpool after several poor performances, but a 2-0 win over Everton could be a sign that the Liverpool of old are back and ready to prove themselves to the fans and people who doubted them this season.

With Liverpool attacking the Kop they came out full of energy and tempo that we have not seen enough of this season. Although with all the pressure and possession Liverpool had they didn’t get many shots away, with a Cody Gakpo header that sailed wide, giving them their only glimpse at goal in the opening half an hour. On the 37th minute an Everton corner drifted to the back post where James Tarkowski was there to head the ball for what seemed a certain goal, but it struck the inside of the post and the ball rebounded back out to Darwin Nunez. Nunez broke past the defenders with a Liverpool of old counter attack and crossed the ball into Salah, who with a first time touch tucked it past a wrong footed Pickford. This is Salah’s first goal of 2023 and his first at Anfield in the league since October 2022. The Kop exploded as Salah raced off to celebrate with his teammates. At halftime Liverpool were still in front and controlling the game.

At the start of the second half Liverpool picked up where they had left off scoring after only 4 minutes. Salah threaded a great ball into Trent Alexander Arnold, who then put a lovely first time cross to the back post for Cody Gakpo to tap in – his maiden goal for the club. After 6 starts without a goal this might be what Gakpo needed for his confidence. We’ll see in the next few matches but hopefully Gakpo hs found his scoring boots.

Liverpool continued to control the rets of the match with Stefan Bajetic getting better and better with each performance. Diogo Jota came on as a substitute for Nunez. It was good to see him back at Anfield playing for the first time since October 16th 2022. Then after a couple of times singing Si Senor, Bobby Firmino was brought on for the last ten minutes. It was good to see these players back after injury and hopefully a Liverpool side getting back to full strength. Andrew Robertson had a skirmish with Pickford but just couldnt help but laugh. The final whistle blew with a well earned victory. But it’s just a start with tougher tasks coming up in the next week with Newcastle in the league and then a replay of the Champions League final on Tuesday night with Liverpool vs Real Madrid in the round of 16.
