In the future the LFCNews gang will hopefully look back on the start of 2023 and laugh at the randomness of the results, our lack of skill on the ball and how our brightest players and new signings couldn’t buy a goal.
At the time of writing, LFC has played 7 games in all competitions since the start of the new year, winning just 1, drawing 2, and losing 4 including a toothless display against a Wolves side which may be the starting point for the downfall of the Boss (we hope it isn’t).
We don’t think it’s time for the Boss to go – in fact the opposite, we think the owners should make a decision and either sell the club or back the big man with the funds to totally rebuild the team and squad.
Big shout, so why?
Well, Klopp’s tactics are centered around a high-pressing, counter-attacking style of play that is meant to put unbearable pressure on the other teams defence. The “Gegenpress” requires every player to work together to win back the ball as soon as it is lost, thus limiting the opponent’s time on the ball and creating opportunities for counter-attacks.
The boss has changed from his Dortmund days to use a 4-3-3 formation. This allows for a high press up the field and provides a balanced midfield, with one central defensive midfielder (CDM), one box-to-box midfielder (B2B), and one attacking midfielder (AM). The three forwards pose a strong attacking threat, with the ability to score goals from any position.
So, what’s wrong? The press isn’t working and allows opposition teams to put balls over the top, into space and attack a defensive line that is out of position.
Combined with age of players, a lack of a controlling midfield, a lack of investment and injuries it’s gone horribly wrong. So, switch tactics….simples?! Well we have seen the Boss move to a 4-2-3-1 for the Brighton game on the 14th January and whilst players can’t adept in a game or two the midfield was exposed by a lack of pace and inability to deal with Brighton’s one touch football.
So, what does he do? Liverpool need to put a huge anchor into the water and lash the sails or else suffer our worst league position in recent memory, or potentially be put in a relegation struggle….unthinkable for the mighty reds!
We recommend biting the bullet and moving to an immediate 4-4-2 and discourage Trent and Robbo from straying too far from their positions unless pushing a counterattack or using the wings. Yes it’s been tried before (October 2022) but it felt like it was a half-hearted effort from both the Boss and the players.
Nunez is used to this formation from his time at Benfica and having two solid rows should stop some of the most obvious tactics being used against us, then break and score on the counter attack.
Key players returning from injury will help but we need to start winning again to ensure that this is simply a bad season not a disastrous season
